In recent years, catamaran charters have become increasingly popular among sailing holidaymakers. Compared to monohull boats, catamarans offer significantly more space and comfort. The cabins are often equipped with private bathrooms, and the spacious deck area invites you to relax. The interior also provides enough room to wait out a rain shower in comfort.
When you rent a catamaran, you benefit not only from plenty of space for your crew, but also from numerous storage areas for provisions and luggage. Diving equipment, boards, and other sports gear can easily be stored on board.
A catamaran is a type of multihull boat, unlike the classic monohull sailing yacht. It has two hulls connected by a deck — the so-called bridge deck. This not only provides room for maneuvering but also offers plenty of space to enjoy your time at sea. Often, a flybridge is located above the bridge deck, adding an extra relaxation area and giving you more privacy when chartering a catamaran.
The two hulls not only create more living space but also offer a safer sailing experience. Thanks to their construction, catamarans are more stable and reduce heavy rolling. Heeling is hardly noticeable. Each hull is also equipped with its own rudder and engine, improving maneuverability. Due to the shallow draft, you can sail close to the coast and anchor safely in almost any bay.
Typically, each hull contains two cabins, making catamarans ideal for families traveling together or larger groups. The spacious saloon can also be used as a sleeping area. Catamaran charters offer many advantages for families: kids have more room to play, and there are plenty of spots for privacy. The stable design provides a safe sailing experience, as catamarans are very resistant to capsizing.
The shallow draft allows you to access more protected, shallow bays, which also makes swimming safer. The saloon is elevated above the water, offering a great view. The bridge deck provides plenty of space for the crew — the perfect spot to enjoy the sea breeze. On average, up to twelve people can join a trip.
Whether you need a boating license depends on the specific sailing area. In Greece, two experienced sailors are required on board, at least one of whom must hold a valid license. The second crew member should have sufficient sailing experience. In Croatia, a radio certificate is also mandatory. In Italy, a license is required if you plan to sail more than six nautical miles from the coast.
If you don't have the required license, you can still rent a catamaran. Most marinas offer the option to hire a skipper who will guide you safely to the most beautiful bays and islands. Another advantage of catamarans: the family can be accommodated in one hull while the skipper sleeps in the other — offering maximum privacy.
Catamarans can sail faster than monohulls because they ride higher on the water and displace less water, reducing drag and allowing more efficient use of wind power. However, they require more wind to sail effectively — a sailing angle of 60 to 65 degrees is needed, compared to 30 to 35 degrees for traditional sailing yachts.
Marina fees are generally higher due to the vessel’s width. While catamarans are very safe, there is a rare risk of capsizing — usually only if the sail area is too large and speed too high. A capsized catamaran cannot be righted and is considered lost at sea in such cases.
Popular destinations include the Kvarner Bay and Dalmatia in Croatia, with their many islands. One advantage is the short travel time. The Maestral, a northwesterly wind with three to five Beaufort, ensures ideal sailing conditions. These areas offer deep water close to shore. Dalmatia is also known for its consistent winds, making it great for beginners learning to sail.
