Sailing on a sailboat is much more than just a means of transportation – it's a harmonious interaction between man and nature. When you charter a sailboat, you experience the power of the wind, the play of the waves, and a stunning backdrop of islands, coastlines, and open waters. A sailboat becomes a yacht when it has weight stabilization – usually through a ballast keel. Alternatively, daggerboard constructions can be used, which can be lowered or raised to navigate shallow waters. These designs prevent drifting sideways and ensure a stable ride in the desired direction – a crucial advantage when renting a sailboat.
In contrast to a catamaran, a classic sailboat has only one hull. Below deck, sailboats offer cozy living spaces with sleeping areas (berths) and a kitchen (galley). For this reason, renting a sailboat has long been a dream for many. A sailboat is officially called a yacht when it's over ten meters long – smaller versions are known as dinghies.
While smaller sailboats are often sufficient for short trips, a sailboat offers much more comfort for longer holidays. Instead of searching for hotels, you sleep comfortably in the berths of your yacht and cook your meals in the well-equipped kitchen. When you charter a sailboat, you enjoy undisturbed nights in romantic coves – far away from the noise and lights of the cities, with an unobstructed view of the starry sky.
Whether it's Greece, Croatia, or Turkey – renting a sailboat is the ideal solution for those planning an extended sailing holiday. Due to the generous space available, many yachts are also well-suited for groups or families. A sailboat is often chartered to reach diving spots or explore remote islands.
The wind is the heart of every sailing trip, making sailboat chartering an especially environmentally friendly and sustainable experience. The power of nature replaces conventional engines, allowing for silent gliding across the water. In addition to the mainsail, a foresail is also used when renting a sailboat – in many cases, additional sails for specific wind directions are available.
If the wind is absent, all modern sailboats have a reliable engine. This provides propulsion during calm weather or difficult harbor maneuvers, ensuring you safely reach the next bay or harbor.
Renting a sailboat is ideal for those who love the sea and want to feel a sense of freedom. The equipment of modern yachts leaves little to be desired: comfortable sleeping places, seating areas, bathrooms, and well-equipped kitchens make the boat a floating home. Depending on the budget and desire, the level of luxury can be customized.
Whether with friends, family, or as a couple – sailboats offer enough space for all travelers. Particularly for children, life on board is an unforgettable adventure, where they come into playful contact with nature and learn a lot about wind, weather, and marine life. Unlike a sport-oriented regatta, the focus when chartering a sailboat is on a relaxed vacation.
Most sailboats have a ballast keel that ensures stability and safety – even in strong winds. Yachts typically weigh up to six tons and have a corresponding draft. When approaching shallow bays, caution is required.
Care is also needed when maneuvering in the harbor. The boat's heavy weight makes it slow to brake – which can cause damage if not countered in time. Therefore, harbors should never be entered under sail, but always with engine power.
For renting a sailboat, you generally need an internationally recognized sailing license. Particularly outside of Europe, there are sometimes very different regulations – so make sure to thoroughly check the requirements of the charter country beforehand.
An experienced skipper on board is indispensable for the first trip on a sailboat. Less experienced sailors should choose calm sailing areas with moderate winds and good infrastructure to start with. The Mediterranean offers numerous ideal regions – such as the Dalmatian coast in Croatia or the Ionian Islands in Greece. The southeast coast of Mallorca is also perfect for beginners: short distances, calm coves, and numerous harbors make the area particularly family-friendly.
Experienced sailors who seek adventure will find demanding conditions in the Aegean Sea or on the Cyclades. The Meltemi, a strong northern wind, regularly provides challenging sailing conditions. Sardinia, the west coast of Turkey, or the Strait of Bonifacio are areas where wind strength and sea conditions require the utmost attention.
Another highlight is the Caribbean – one of the most diverse sailing areas in the world, with constant trade winds and a dreamy island world. Croatia, on the other hand, offers ideal conditions for beginners and advanced sailors – with short stages, excellent infrastructure, and one of the largest charter fleets in the world.
