We deliver what the future demands - namely even more sustainability - in the form of yachts with electric propulsion. ➡️ In this blog post, you will learn how power management operates on a two-week cruise aboard the electric yacht Oceanis 40.1 ELECTRIC "Moritz". ⛵

First things first: Details of the electric yacht "Moritz"

  • Model: Oceanis 40.1 ELECTRIC
  • Base: Marina Kornati, Biograd, Kroatien
  • Year of construction: 2023
  • Cabins: 3
  • Yacht length: 12.87 m
  • Max. Passengers: 6 + 1

The Oceanis 40.1 Electric is powered purely by an electric motor and has a diesel-powered generator as a backup, so that the engine is always ready for use even when the batteries are low.
However, the sailing yacht's energy system is designed to operate independently of shore power and without the use of a generator. Thanks to the recuperative system when sailing, in which the engine also functions as a generator, and the integrated photovoltaic system, you can enjoy true freedom at sea. Recuperation while sailing generates 750 W at a speed of approx. 6 knots and 2.5 kW at 10 knots.
➡️ While sailing, energy is generated by the rotation of the propeller, which is then fed back into the batteries. In addition, the photovoltaic system supports the energy supply by using solar energy. ☀️

This is what your vacation on the electric yacht "Moritz" could look like

Example of a typical sailing day:

You leave the harbor in Biograd with 100% power and unfortunately have a headwind and must use the engines. After about 1 hour, the wind picks up and you set sail with 85% battery power. You sail with 6.5 knots so you can recuperate (the propeller generates electricity) and, in combination with the photovoltaics, charge the batteries to 100% again until the evening when you reach the bay. The service batteries are also charged at the same time so that you can start the day with 100% battery power the next morning.

If you want to spend a day relaxing in a bay, the 1.5 kWp photovoltaic system charges the batteries by around 15 % per day (including normal power consumption).
➡️ In the event of a prolonged lull and no solar energy for days, the backup generator automatically takes over the power supply if the battery power falls below 30 %. However, this never happened during the two-week trip we described. 😊 Most of the time, the battery power remained between 70 and 80 % and never dropped below 50 %. We only charged once - but only because the power was free at the charging point.

"The Moritz" - A journey into the future of sailing

➡️ Many of our charter customers have already been able to enjoy the comfort and environmentally friendly aspects of a sailing trip on our electric yacht "Moritz". 👍

With this in mind, we would like to share a special letter with you that we recently received from Veronika and Georg, two valued guests who have already experienced a wonderful sailing vacation on the "Moritz".

Share your experiences from your sailing vacation with us

Their words to the ship owner reflect their personal experiences:

💬 Hello dear Roman Czech,

I was delighted to be able to spend this week on the fantastic "Moritz" with my husband and my 15-year-old child. When we were looking for a boat for our Easter trip this year, we found the idea of a sailing yacht with electric propulsion fascinating, and we were very impressed by the concept in practice. The boat is great and fast to sail in all wind conditions, recuperation and PV power worked well, even if a more powerful motor could be helpful in strong headwinds and waves.

In any case, the time for alternative, quiet and non-smelly forms of energy is long overdue, and the boat suited us perfectly in terms of its equipment and layout! Thanks also for the "instruction letter" in the boat. So, it was possible and especially nice to discover that this ship belongs to an IGÖ ambassador :)

My husband will also be reporting on the "new" sailing in his sailing club and sharing our experience. We will gladly charter the "Moritz" again.

Best regards!
Veronika & Georg

Our answer:

💬 Dear Veronika, dear Georg, thank you very much for taking the time to share your experiences on board the yacht "Moritz". It is always inspiring to hear how our guests enjoy and appreciate their time on board our first electric yacht. We were thrilled to read how the "Moritz" not only made your Easter cruise an unforgettable experience, but also impressed you with its performance and eco-friendly concept.

Your feedback on the technical aspects, such as recuperation and photovoltaic power, is very valuable to us. Your words encourage us in our actions and motivate us to expand our range of yachts with electric motors. We hope that your letter will also inspire others to choose the "Moritz" for their next cruise.

It is our goal for more crews to experience the many positive aspects and joys of sailing with an electric yacht. - Your Pitter Yachtcharter Team
